Concert Review | The New Pornographers, The Dodos and Imaad Wasif

Bands: The New Pornographers, The Dodos, Imaad Wasif
Location : The Egyptian Theater, Boise, Idaho
Time:8-11:30 P.M.

I can honestly say that for the most part I wasn't very excited for this concert. I had never really listened to The Dodos or Imaad Wasif and The New Pornographers don't seem to rock very hard in most of their tracks. However, I can say that I was completely caught off guard after the show started.

Kicking the concert off was the band Imaad Wasif. A solo artist, Wasif has played along side some notable bands including the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. At the beginning, the show wasn't very lively, and I think it was due to the layout of The Egyptian. Generally, it is used for as movie theater; which is what it's set up for perfectly, but for concerts the atmosphere can feel a little awkward. Most everyone was sitting down for what I felt should have been a head banging, crowd jamming show by Imaad.

Album Review | Post War Years - The Greats and the Happenings

This may not be the newest album, but it sure as hell breaks through the norm in comparison to many freshly pressed cds and new downloads in my library. These four blokes have quite the different feel. I found their sound to give off an indie/math rock feel, but the band claims to be laden in Latin/Hard House/Jazz genres.

Post War Years is a ground breaking band. From systematically dismantling the music industry along with bands such as MGMT and Does it Offend You Yeah?, to producing some of the most unique and diverse sounds East side of the Atlantic. Post War Years is pushing for change and it's apparent in their music and actions.

Album Review | Library Voices - Hunting Ghosts (& Other Collected Shorts) (2008)

Hunting Ghosts (& Other Collected Shorts) is Library Voices first EP. They are a band from Regina, Sk. My favorite song off the EP is “Step Off The Map & Float”. The song is a stand out pop classic. This is a song about having meaning in your life , about being able to ''Step Off the Map &Float'' or being able to push above mediocrity. It's very catchy and each time the chorus comes around I just want to yell woah oh oh with the band.I love how this song blends all the instruments weirdly, yet pleasantly.

Other songs on the EP are great as well,“Things We Stole From Vonnegut's Grave” are also great. They use an organ in this song that’s ripped right out of a circus or something from Tales of The Crypt Keeper. It’s great, they use this instrument to give the song a slightly haunting feel, and overcome it’s obnoxiousness with lots of bubblegum bouncy, boy-girl harmonies and guitar melodies.

“Hunting Ghosts” is a change to something much more relaxing. Less poppy and more beautiful instead with the girl singing in a deep soothing voice and echoing “oooohs” in the background. The song builds and builds climaxes perfectly as violins join to increase the feeling of the song's urgency. The band really has a sense of how to play with the emotion in their music. The rest of the EP is just as good. Definitely pick it up.

News | Pigeon Poos on Kings Of Leon Bassist & he ends show. So What? I've had one shit in my mouth

"Kings Of Leon cancelled a show last night (Friday 23rd) three songs in after a pigeon 'relieved itself' on Jared Followill's head." (Source)

Now, whats the big deal? You want to know a little trivia. Yours Truly (Corey Funt) volunteers at a animal rehab center and works with pigeons just about every week. Doing things like weighing them, cleaning their cages, changing their water, and maintaining their diets. The other day while cleaning the aviary and removing their newspapers one actually shit so it went a bit in my mouth.

See folks, Music, Birds and Cereal, is not just about the music we're also about the birds.

Album Review | Kele – The Boxer

Kele – The Boxer

After Bloc Party’s release of their album “Intimacy” and tour they decided to go on hiatus. However, during this time, front man “Kele” Okereke decided to delve deeper into electronic music with his new album “The Boxer”. Myself being a fan of Okereke’s earlier electronic work in Bloc Party; I loved the idea of this. Sadly, once I heard the album, my ears thought otherwise.

I honestly wish I could explain it better, but I really can’t tell what kind of album this is attempting to be. The album isn't wholly terrible, it just feels like it was rushed. Okereke appears as though he’s not sure what kind of music he is trying to create. The opening song “Walk Tall” is like a clash of Saul Williams’ spoken poetry music spliced with a pop song. Whereas the album’s single “Tenderoni” is a trance/techno piece that sounds like it was ripped off straight from Mason’s “Exceeder” with a hint of Wiley’s “Wearing My Rolex”. Then, there are also tracks on the album specifically “Everything You Wanted” and “Unholy Thought” that sound like they could be b-sides or leftovers from Bloc Party.

Fans of Bloc Party will recognize the distinctive guitar/electronic sound the band was known for, but, in the end it just doesn’t feel right. I personally think Okereke could make great music as a solo artist, but he needs to decide just what genre of focus on.

News | The Guy From Maroon 5 Finds band called "Animal Collective"

The Other Sides of The Coin
1. David Greenwald | Rawkblog.net all started with this post called "Pop Stars Tweeting About Indie Rock: A Brief History" .

2. Davids Tweets

Update July 23,2010

In retrospect this whole story is a bit childish. Maroon 5's pop isn't completely horrible, and I'm usually the first to point out that if you don't have something nice to say don't say it at all. For those unaware there's a flame war between Adam Levine and some rock blogger. I guess this is sort of funny, but its funny in the same way its funny that my Grandpa calls The Apple Store, The Fruit Store. Or funny in the same way we can how we can laugh at old retro 80s haircuts and make up. Now that I think about it, Animal Collective really aren't THAT huge and it's nice that Adam is pointing them out to his audience.

Update 2!
On the other hand, looking at  David's Tweets and original tumblr post we can see that David post was simply a collection of celebs posting about indie music. He didn't call Adam any names or anything. Indeed the intention of the post is just a seemingly humorous look at the two different worlds celebrities and hipsters live in. But, then you have Adam being a douche because he calls David a cynical indie snob for no reason.

Concert Review | Au Revoir Simone [July 17th, 2010 at TT The Bears, Cambridge, MA, USA]

Au Revoir Simone at TT The Bears, Cambridge, MA
Au Revoir Simone At TT The Bears, Cambridge, MA

I had never seen Au Revoir Simone before the past Saturday, July 17th, and I really hope that I can say that I still haven't. I haven't been a fan of theirs for long, but I recognized their name on the TT The Bears calendar and decided I would give them a listen. I checked out "The Bird of Music" and was instantly a fan of the dreamy, synth-pop sounds. Needless to say I was very excited to see this show. Unfortunately, the concert did not live up to my expectations.

Pictures, MP3, and more review after the break.

Album Review | Woodpigeon - Die Stadt Muzikanten (2010)

Die Stadt Muzikanten is Woodpigeon's third album. Woodpigeon could be described as the perfect campfire music. The entire album uses a sound similar to the old folk songs of Pete Seeger. They use acoustic instruments and sing along harmonies, with some electric instruments for decoration. It’s like listening to a slice of Americana (Canadiana in this case).

Song Review | Young Liars - Colours

Young Liars are a Vancouver based band. I got a email from the producers of their latest song "Colours" :Caled The Claymore Studios (Link Here). They found us through our connection to Oh No! Yoko (Link Here). They produced Oh No! Yoko's 90's Kids as well.

This song starts with chilled psychedelic singing about traffic lights and colours. The singers voice is very 80s new wave sounding which makes it perfect for psychedelic electronic songs like this. Throughout the song there is a beautiful synth that sounds very dreamy by its sound pattern being similar to waves after waves (as in dream waves). It is as if the band were trying to pull the listener up and above the action to view all the colours they mention in the song by using dream imagery. Like flying in an airplane over Las Vegas to see the changing neon lights. They keep it upbeat by littering it with awesome riffs at every turn. Its also got a kick ass chorus with the tempo speeding up and the backbeat reflecting a video game boss battle :p .  Awesome song check it out.
